How to Change a Flat Tire in Emergencies

Knowing how to change a flat tire is important if you're ever in situation in which you can't call a professional to replace it for you. At Hatfield Subaru, we care about helping our readers become informed vehicle owners. We recommend that you test changing a tire at home to learn how the process works for your car. You don't want your first time going through the motions to be in the real situation of having to replace a flat tire.

When you change a tire, find a safe, level place to park. Your car is at risk of rolling on a hill. Also engage the emergency brake and use wheel chocks on the opposite side of the vehicle. Jack up the car and lift it, then remove the lug nuts and wheel. Take off the flat tire and place it under the car in case the the car drops from an unstable jack. Put on the spare tire and tighten its lugs as tight as possible. Tighten the bolt enough to secure your tire but not too tight. Lower your car and remove the jack and wheel chocks.

We encourage you to stay safe on the road by knowing how to correctly replace a flat tire. Consult your owner's manual for any important details for your car's make and model. You may follow up with our service center in the event of a flat tire.
