If you're not experienced in parallel parking the thought of it can be intimidating. But with a little practice you'll be able to parallel park like a pro. Just follow these simple steps to help you learn how to properly parallel park.

  • Find a space that you can safely get your vehicle in to without hitting another vehicle. More experienced parallel parkers are able to get in tighter spaces.
  • Turn on your signal and pull up so that your vehicle is parallel to the vehicle in front of the space you want.
  • Make sure there are no other vehicles coming, turn your wheel to the right, and begin backing up into the space. Stop when your vehicle is at a 45-degree angle.
  • Straighten your vehicle out as you finish backing into the space by turning the wheel forward. Make sure your front bumper is next to the rear bumper of the vehicle in front of you.
  • Position the vehicle in the space by centering it. Slightly back up until you almost touch the vehicle behind you, then shift to drive and pull forward towards the curb.
